In mid-October last year, Hobart City Mission purchased the Balmoral Motor Inn in Glenorchy.
The former motel, now called Mountain View, provides supported housing for people on the Housing Tasmania priority waitlist. The purchase is just one more step towards ending homelessness in our community.
With 32 units available, the Mountain View program plays a significant role in helping people to get back on their feet. The clients now living at Mountain View had previously been experiencing homelessness or were at high-risk of homelessness, with nowhere else to go.
Mountain View has four dedicated support staff who work seven days a week to help nurture a strong sense of community, provide support, and assist residents to work on their goals. There are also staff onsite to provide emergency, after-hours support if need be. This model of 24/7 support will help residents whenever the need arises. Hobart City Mission funds this support program, and that is only possible because of the generous support of donors like you.
The purchase of the Balmoral Motor Inn was also supported by the State Government, who committed $2.1 million to the purchase of the property. Hobart City Mission contributed a further $2.3 million towards the purchase. Hobart City Mission will also fund the ongoing costs of the program, including staff costs, and the running of important life-skills programs.
The contribution from Hobart City Mission would not have been possible without a number of very generous donations and bequests. The kindness of our donors means that people experiencing homelessness now have a safe place to call home.
It is thanks to you, and other kind-hearted donors like you, that these new and innovative programs exist. Hobart City Mission is dedicated to filling the gaps in service delivery in Southern Tasmania.
Your choice to support this vision demonstrates the compassion and care you show for others.
We thank you for continuing to help make Tasmania a better place for us all.
