Before coming to Hobart City mission for help, Mandy and her little daughter Jemma had moved in with Mandy’s new boyfriend.
Mandy had some misgivings. But, dreaming of a proper home for her 5-year-old, she pushed her doubts aside.
“I moved in with him… I suppose it was one of those decisions where you’ve got nowhere else to go and then you get yourself into situations like that”.
It wasn’t long before Mandy’s worst fears came true. What started as controlling behaviour soon turned into physical abuse.
For a while Mandy endured it, just to give her little boy a home. But after a particularly terrifying incident, Mandy and Jack were forced to flee, with nowhere to go.
Heartbreakingly, Mandy confided that she even considered going back to what was clearly a dangerous situation, just to give Jemma a roof over her head and keep cold and hunger at bay.
