How Shopping at City Mission Op Shops Helps Your Local Community

When you shop at City Mission Op Shops, you’re not only getting great quality items at low prices, you’re also supporting important programs that help the most vulnerable in our community.

There are three main programs that City Mission Op Shops raises money for. These include Small Steps, DIY Dads and Emergency Assistance.

Small Steps

Small Steps

Small Steps provides a live-in parenting and life skills program for 12 young mums (under 25 years old) and their babies, with 24/7 onsite care.

Small Steps was founded by Hobart City Mission after identifying a desperate need in Southern Tasmania for supported accommodation, targeted at young mums at risk of homelessness or having their infants removed into State care due to a lack of appropriate accommodation and support.

The mums are taught skills that can assist them in living independently in the community, such as budgeting, maintaining a stable tenancy, and providing a safe and healthy environment for their child. The young mums are also taught practical application of parenting skills to successfully and independently transition into the community with improved levels of self-confidence and employability.

DIY DadsDIY Dads

DIY Dads provides DIY Dads provides 8 self-contained units for dads with either full or part time care of their children. The dads can be any age, and are able to stay at the DIY Dads program for up to two years.

Hobart City Mission developed the program for single fathers who do not have stable accommodation and are therefore unable to maintain custody of their children.

Each resident dad is taught skills that can assist them in living independently in the community, such as budgeting, maintaining a tenancy and making healthy lifestyle choices.

As well as accommodation, the program provides life and parent skill training, advocacy and self-guidance to help develop confident and capable single fathers, with the aim of transitioning into independent living in the community.

Emergency Assistance

Emergency Assistance is one of Hobart City Missions core programs, and we are committed to assisting people in our Southern Tasmanian community who are in immediate short-term crisis situations.

With more than 40% of Tasmanians being under the national average income, any large expense such as a power bill, medical bill or car repairs can result in an immediate time of crisis for someone who is vulnerable.

This expense could result in the individual or family making the choice between eating and paying rent. At Hobart City Mission, we are here to help with the stress of making this choice.

We assist with food packs and vouchers, vouchers for City Mission Op Shops for clothing, bedding or furniture, utilities, and referrals to appropriate services and agencies.
