HCM Celebrates National Volunteering Week with record numbers

In 2017, Hobart City Mission (HCM) saw a record number of volunteers with 180 individuals generously giving their time to volunteer at HCM. This included volunteers in the Op Shops, Business Services, Fundraising Events and Small Steps (our young mums program).

With the increase in numbers, Hobart City Mission has also experienced an increase in diversity within the volunteers. This includes a larger number of younger and international volunteers.

Jessica, 28, started volunteering with Hobart City Mission in March 2018 in business administration. Her motivation for volunteering was community; to learn about the Tasmanian community, to be part of the community, and to help the community.

After moving from Colombia over two years ago, Jessica found it difficult to obtain quality employment opportunities in the area of business administration, in which she worked in back in her home country.

“Volunteering allows me to learn the skills needed for the Australian industry, and to provide experience,” says Jessica.

“Being able to help vulnerable people in the community, I feel more part of the community.”

Jessica volunteers two days in the Hobart Office, whilst working casually in hospitality.
